3D Week 04 – Assignment 1: part 3

Hello. It’s time for an update on my sci-fi crate, so here we go!

The inspiration for my crate is all from the Halo and Portal games. Well for shape and model I was looking more at the Portal’s “companion cube” as I hope you can tell from the rough and hard edges I have in my crate. When it comes to texture mostly of what I aimed for is from Halo I would say, as the crate I am trying to create is a bit more serious than those from the Portal’s series.

So for the diffuse map (the map that holds all colours, icons and so on. think of it as a textured piece of paper that is wrapped around your model.) I chose the materials metal, rubber and carbon fibre as they are rough and almost industrial, just like the Spartan suit from halo is. For getting the right appearance of the materials I will have to use a specular map to get the reflection and normal map for the texture of it but that’s for next week. As the Spartan suit’s is themed with one high saturated colours of either green, red or blue I thought my crate would have one of these as colour theme. I chose red simply because I think it looks better than the others. (And maybe a little because I didn’t wanted to do blue just because “sci-fi” is supposed to be “blue”, wanted to try if I could make it work with red.)

The colours I used (well, it was only red) I made pretty hard saturated. The colour is distinct and even darkened a bit to compensate for the brighter metal scratches and polished parts inside the spheres. The rubber I made with zero saturation as to make contrast with the redness so they are basically all dark grey. To give them a little bit of wear and tear to fit the rest of the texture I highlighted the edges as when rubber or plastic gets damage they tend to brighten a bit. It also adds a bit to contrast so the grey parts aren’t all grey and boring.

The colour I use is warm. As sci-fi tend to have a bluish tone to it, it is often a cold felling in a sci-fi image overall and as I stated before I wanted to see if I could do the opposite of the “stereotypes” of sci-fi. My crate also have a dirty look to it, it looks like it have been out in the sun and hot weather for ages, maybe in a dessert. At least it doesn’t look like a new, directly from factory crate for sure.

This is my crate with an “UV-checker” I got from Nataska, our 3D teacher. It is used when doing the UV map. By using this it is much easier to see how large or small the resolutions on the different parts of the UV map are. This is all so that your crate won’t look blurry on some spots as they have too few pixels, while some will have “too many”. You would want a diffuse that is as even as possible. You can also use it to see so that there aren’t any big distortions on your texture and if there are you might need to re-cut your UV-map and relax the tensions creating those distortions and warps.

For my crate I chose to use the same area of the UV map several times so that my result would be of higher resolution in the texture as we were limited to 512px X 512px for this assignment. For my crate that is symmetrical in all dimensions this isn’t a big of a problem as the symmetry already is obvious and the details are so small they are hard to see if being repeated compared to an unsymmetrical crate of a different material (like if you see the same planks of a wooden box being repeated they are much easier to spot). Also, this crate has six sides, and no matter how you try to look at it you will only see a maximum of three sides at the same time, so why don’t repeat the texture on those sides that you can’t see at the same time? This saves both time in creating all of the maps, but the crate also gets a higher resolution by reusing the space on the UV-map.

This is how my final diffuse map turned out. As you can see I reused a lot of space. If I haven’t done this the resolution would have been around 6 times smaller than what I managed to do now. But as I said before, this only works for a few types of situations such as mine.

This is how my crate looks in the Unreal Engine (using UDK). Note that this is only with a diffuse map. The specular map and the normal map will be made next week, and hopefully this crate will look much nicer than it does right now.

Advanced Game Design – Analysing another board game

Hello!!

This is another Analyse of a board game my group and I played during this week. It’s the same assignment as the last one just with a different board game. So for this time we chose a game called Small World Underground which is a simpler strategy based game.

This is what the box looks like.

The game aims for players from eight years and older and can be played by two to five players. It takes from 30 minutes to play up to an hour and half. It’s actually not that different from “Dust” (the board game I analysed two weeks ago). It’s about collecting as many victory coins as you can in a determined amount of rounds by overtake areas on the board and defends them to keep a high income.

Small World Underground includes four maps on two double-sided boards, one for each of the possible amount of players. It contains 15 fantasy-themed Race banners with different creatures and ability’s with 179 Race tokens that matches the Race banners. 21 Special Power badges that can be combined with the Race banners. An amount of different game pieces each with a specified ability, 106 victory coins with four types of value, 1 custom Die with six sides (three sides are empty, three sides are marked by a value of one, two and three) and last one game turn marker for keeping track of what round you’re on.

The game starts by place out the board according to the amount of players, and then each player is handed victory coins with a total value of five. Then the player who last was in a cave or a cellar starts the round. The round is played clockwise and is played in the same order throughout the whole game. What the first player is doing is selecting one out of five Race-banners and Power-badges pre-combined lying on the table. This is the first tactical choice you make as you need to consider what type of race you want to start playing as (they all have different ability’s so it’s wise to choose one that fits whit your plan) and what you want your special-power shall be. In this phase you also have to consider the amount of Race-tokens you want as it is pre-set by adding the number on the Race-banner and the Power-badge together. The last of the things you need to consider before choosing your Banner and Badge is what the combo you want costs. The first of the five is free, the second cost one victory coin, the third costs two and so on. When one combo is chosen one victory coin shall be placed by the player on each of the cheaper combos. These coins will be given to any player who chooses the combo they are placed on.

One example of this first step of the game could be that the first player chose the third combo, which costs him or her two victory coins. These two coins are then placed on each of the cheaper combos. All combos that is more expensive move down one step to fill the gap and a new combo is placed on the table as there always have to be five pairs of combos. The next player chose the second combo and receives the coin placed on his or her Banner and Badge. The third player might choose the new third combo (the old fourth combo); he or she will have to pay two coins and place them on each of the cheaper combos and will not gain one coin as there is none on the current third combo. This goes on for the whole first turn and this method will be used for whenever a player chooses to play a new race.

When all players have chosen their race and the first turn is finished it’s the first players turn again. He or she now needs to decide between two things. First of the player can put his or her race in decline (I will explain that later) or to start conquering Regions. For this first round you will probably go for the conquering as this is the main income for your victory coins. By standard you can collect one victory coin for each area on the board that you have at least one of your Race tokens on. There is however some Race banners that allow you to collect more victory coins depending on how you have conquered; like what types of areas, if your areas are connected or if you have other player’s areas next to yours etc.

Every time you start conquering with a new race you need to start conquering from the edge of the board (including the water areas). When conquering areas you need either an amount of race tokens to take that area over or to roll the die if you don’t have enough. For the water areas you only need one token (but it needs to be moved at the moving phase), for a standard area you need two tokens, for special areas you need three tokens, and for areas occupied by monsters or other players you need one extra token for each monster or race token present in that area. When conquering an area the amount of tokens it takes to conquer that area needs to stay there until the moving phase. If your amount of race tokens isn’t enough to conquer an area and you’re three or less tokens short to conquer you can roll the dice to see if you will succeed anyway. By adding the numbers on the die with the amount of race tokens you have left you either succeed or not. To succeed the total value of tokens and the die you rolled needs to be higher than the amount of tokens it takes to conquer the area.

When you have conquered the areas that you can and want to take over, you’re entering your moving phase which is when you move your race tokens within the areas that you occupy. This can be used for defending the areas you own or in advance for next round as you may want to conquer more areas. To achieve your victory coins for your areas you need to have at least one token left in each area, so don’t abandon an area unless you have to or really want to (for tactics as an example).

When you have moved your race tokens and your round is finished (if there isn’t a special move or rule for your race that is) you can collect one victory coin for each area that you occupy, and additional victory coins as result of your Race, Special Power, Popular Places and/or Righteous Relic’s benefits. You can also collect one victory coin from each area of a race that you have put in decline.

Decline is, as mentioned before, a choice you can make at the beginning of your turn. When you have declined your race you aren’t allowed to do any movement or conquering for this round. By entering your race in decline you flip your Race banner and your Special power over and these are no longer benefitting you (except for some special powers that still will have effect after declined). You also flip one Race token for each area you occupy and remove all other tokens of the race you’re putting in decline. For this round you still collect one victory coin for each area you own, but you don’t receive the bonus from your Race, your Special Power, Popular places and/or Righteous Relic’s unless they state otherwise but then it’s over. When it’s your turn again you shall choose one of the five combos placed on the table (just like in the first round when you selected race for the first time. They still cost you more or less depending on their placed order. When you start a new race you shall start conquering from the edge of the board.

The tactic is to defend your declined race with your new one as you will still gain victory coins from those areas you occupy with declined race tokens. You can only have one declined race and on active race at a time so you need to consider declining your race or not as you lose all your declined areas when selecting a new race for the third (or more) time.

The game ends when the Game turn marker has reached the last spot on the Game Turn track and all players have completed their last turn. The victory coins is revealed to everyone and counted. The player with the highest value in victory coins is the winner of the game. If there is a tie between two or more players the player with most Race tokens, both active and in decline, in the board wins. The rulebook doesn’t tell who wins if the amount of victory coins is the same and the amount of race tokens is the same between the players, so I’m going to assume that in that case it is a tie.

The best part of the game

The best part of the game would be the high replay value. The amount of different combinations between Races banners and Special Power badges is allowing for a different game session every time. The game change by having different maps (by playing a different amount of players) which also adds a lot to the replay value, as there are new worlds to play in. It’s simply a different game every time you want to play, which in the board game genre is something rare.

The worst part of the game

The worst part would be the goal of the game. The game has a really flat basic goal; which is to collect as many victory points as you can. This isn’t something new or special in the history of board games. I’m not saying the victory coins-system should be removed as they have an interesting interaction with the rest of the game, just that the relationship between victory coins and the goal of the game seems boring and could have been improved a lot with missions or objectives for the players.

The core system of the game

The core system of Small World Underground would be the conquer system as it is by conquering new areas and then defend them you receive the victory coins (the actual goal of the game). So as better you are at conquering and defending areas the grater the chance of you winning. I considered the victory coins to be the core system at first, but I think that the victory coin system can easily be replace by switching to another goal of the game, like having a “mission” for each player (like in risk), for example they maybe need take over all areas of a specified type, defeat all monsters or take out another player etc. This type of play style can also replace the Turn marker and the Turn marker track as the player to first complete his or hers “mission” will win. If this was an included system in the game I would say that this would be the core system, but as it isn’t I still state that the conquering system is the core of this game. There is also a lot of smaller system that is related to the conquering system, such as some Race banners and Special Power badges is directly related to what to conquering and how etc.

The most interesting system of the game

The most interesting system would be the Race banners and Special Power badges, as they have a really high amount of different combinations making them really interesting. As you choose a new combination you need to consider so many things, adding depth to the gameplay and makes players have a higher amount of tactical choices. It also adds to the most interesting system as you might need to spend victory points to get to play the race with the special power you want.

The target group interpretation                 

The recommended age for this game is (as I mentioned earlier) eight and older. I think this actually is a good recommended age as for first of; the aesthetics of the game really suits a younger age with the cartoony art style. But it also suits for an eight year old as it isn’t too complex to play and pretty easy to follow along, there are some minor parts that might be too complex though like understanding all the races ability’s and what the special powers brings to you and how you shall apply that in your tactics. Even though the game targets for such a young audience it doesn’t mean it gets boring for older players as the game have such interesting systems in it.

Summation

I think overall this game was real great; it was funny and not too complex to understand how to play without getting boring and actually offers a wider range of tactical choices and play styles. Some systems of the game can be change though like the goal of the game. I would much rather see an object or mission you have to complete instead of just collecting victory points in a pre-set amount of rounds. It might be getting a bit too hard or complex for the youngest players but I absolutely think it should be an option to the current goal of the game.

3D week 03 – Assignment 2: part 1

Hello again!

This is the next part of my blogpost for this week. It’s about the object I choose at the Gotland Museum a week ago. So well… here we go!

I chose this dagger as my project as it seemed as an interesting and challenging object to model. There are both smooth and sharp edges, and it’s made out of different materials so it adds to the making of texture and specular maps. So basically because I wanted something that gives me in a more challenge than the other blockier objects in the museum, which will pushes me to solve the challenges of this project will offer me, for learning, experiment and getting more practise.

At the museum the dagger is explained as an exclusive object as it is made out of silver. It was found together with a whistle (also made out of silver), and they think it probably have been owned by a higher commander. As the whistle is used to signal on board a ship the commander probably did work on a ship. I don’t think the dagger is made to use for war as it is an exclusive device and was probably made for opening letters or something similar.

I will go for an “Asterix and Obelix” style for this dagger as that is something I want to try out. By going for a more cartoony style I will really have to applicate the style in all phases of modelling. The mesh itself must be “funky” and disproportional. The texture will have more saturated colours and contrast to it. The specular is something I will have to experiment on as cartoony isn’t direct “shiny” as normal objects. And the normal map will be interesting to do as I don’t really have a plan of how I want it, so I guess that will be some experimenting as well.

One negative stereotype I will have to avoid when making the dagger is to make it look simple. Sure it’s supposed to look like a simplified version of the real object, like a caricature sort of, but it still has to have character. You need to be able to tell if this dagger is a dangerous or if it is a fancy dagger by its appearance. I really need the details to do their work so that it doesn’t look sloppy. And since I’m going for a cartoon style I’ll have to avoid a too realistic appearance. Like scratches and such should be on the texture map instead of the specular map as they should look drawn on and not like realistic ones.

For the positive stereotype of cartoony, as I mentioned earlier, I will try to make it look “funky” by stretching and bulk the mesh up for giving that disproportional and cartoony look. So to get the final result that I want I will have to make effort in mainly the modelling and the texturing phase.

One risk of making this dagger is that I might make the blade too slim/sharp, which when rendered in a game motor can make it flicker or other stuff not intentioned (because the faces are so close together and faces are see through from the backside it can mess things up such as shading and light etc.). One other thing that I have to watch out for when modelling this dagger is the poly count, as I want it to be as effective as a game piece as possible and the dagger actually isn’t such a big object to begin with.

3D Week 03 – Assignment 1: part 2

Hi!

This week we have been working on our 3D-crates and how to optimize the models for game usage. First of we have learnt that a 3D-model or mesh should only contain polygons with a maximum of four sides otherwise they won’t be handled well and the mesh might end up distorted and not looking like your original model.  Any polygon with a number of sides greater than 4 is called an N-gon (I guess the N stands for any number, like in mathematical formulas, might not be correct though).

When 3D-modeling for games you might also want to consider the amount of polygons you put in to your model. A higher amount of polygons results in a higher “resolution” on your model but drains a lot more performance than simpler 3D-meshes. So depending on what your model or mesh is going to be used for and how close to it the player is going to get you want to consider the amount of polygons. A good rule for cutting down on the poly count is that anything that doesn’t break the silhouette of the mesh can probably be removed from the mesh.  Examples for what doesn’t break the silhouette would be small details and parts of the mesh that is negative extruded into the mesh. This information is added in a later stadium using something called normal-maps or bump-maps.


My Sci-Fi crate was optimized and corrected by Simon Brundin.

The problem with my Sci-Fi crate was that there were some N-gons (marked red on the top two screenshots) in it, so they have to be fixed as they had more than four edges. Another thing that isn’t as critical as the N-gons but can be improved is the poly count. By reconnecting and arranging the vertexes in the spheres he did some savings on the poly count without braking too much of the shape. I guess as the spheres isn’t actually breaking the silhouette at al they might can be reduced even more, you might also have to make sure that the appearance of the holes is corrected by using a normal map in a later phase. In this case I’m pretty satisfied with the poly count, so  next time I would’ve just make sure that there aren’t any N-gons in my model.


Next model is my medieval crate, and is worked on by Rickard Folland.

The problem with the medieval crate was the same as for the Sci-Fi crate, which was the amount of N-gons (marked red in the two top screen shoots). The high amount of n-gons I get probably founding in that when creating my crates I use a tool called Pro-Boolean ( it can be found under compound objects and is different algorithms for how to objects shall interact with each other where they intersect). I use Pro-Boolean to easier and faster doing my model. By performing a Pro-Boolean the vertexes doesn’t connect to each other just the planes and that often results in polygons having a high amount of sides. By the using of Pro-Boolean the poly count raises significant as you have to fix all N-gons as well. Rickard didn’t finished working on this crate as there where so many faces to fix and he did spend most of the time working on making the topology better as that was something the Pro-Boolean did mess up as well.


My last, the cartoon crate I fixed myself.

The problem with this crate was the N-gons (again lol). This crate is way simpler than the others in one way as all lines are straight (no smooth or rounded surfaces or shapes) so this mesh can keep a very low poly count without messing with the silhouette at all. So what I did on this was basically making all faces to four or three sided polygons tops by connecting the vertexes needed or removing the unnecessary ones that occurred when I used the Pro-Boolean tool. Next time I think I’m going to skip the Pro-Boolean tool for some of the steps as it gave me much more work in the clean-up phase, which takes a lot of times. The reason why I tempt to use the tool is that I have done some 3D-modelling for 3D-printing. And when you 3D print the poly count is something you rather keep high than low, and your models need to be fully watertight. For 3D models you only use in digital form (for games and such) you want the poly count to be low and if it saves on your polys the model don’t have to be watertight. So next time I probably will use another method were I can.

3D week 02 – Assignment 1: part 1

Hello!

This week in the 3D-class we have been learning a lot more about 3D-modeling. Our task was to make crates with different themes. We had to choose three different themes out from sci-fi, urban contemporary, post-apocalyptic, medieval or cartoony and then create a crate-like object in that theme. I’d chose sci-fi, medieval and cartoony for my crates as they were the most different styles from each other and I wanted to try making as many different ones as possible! :D

Sci-Fi

First of is my sci-fi crate. When I think of sci-fi games, the first that comes to my mind is the Portal and Halo games (those are the ones I have played the most in the sci-fi genre) so of course my crate was made with those games and their visual styles in mind.

I think Halo defines pretty good what sci-fi is, as the whole game is a sci-fi story-based first-person-shooter game, and that it is taking place in a sci-fi universe were all the man-made objects in the world is associated with sci-fi. The same is for the portal series. They really have that high-end technology feeling to the assets in the game.

My sci-fi crate is a pretty undefined object. I’m not really sure of what it is my self but I created it with the companion cube from the Portal series in mind but instead of making a total copy I threw in those Spartan lines and shapes from the Halo series trying to give it more of a serious appearance. (I wanted to add glowing details but I don’t know how to do that so that will have to wait for now).

Medieval

The next one is my medieval crate. I haven’t played so many medieval themed games in my life so this one was a little bit harder for me. I have played some assassin’s creed, but the inspiration came more from movies I’ve seen during my childhood than a specific game. In the medieval genre I like the pirate stuff the most so of course it had to be some kind of pirate-like asset, and what is more pirate than a treasure chest?

Luckily there are some pirate games out there, and even greater, there is an assassin’s creed pirate game called Black flag (I haven’t played that one though). All the assassin’s creed games are set with a medieval theme with either knights, musketeers, pirates or other characters typical for the medieval genre, making the game great for inspiration for my medieval chest.

When creating my pirate treasure chest I was aiming for that typical one that everyone recognizes from any pirate-themed movie, book, game or anything ever. I tried to add that pirate touch to it by adding the skull details and such.

Cartoon

My last crate is an actual crate, but with a cartoony theme to it. For games with a cartoony style, my thoughts go directly too Team fortress 2. It’s one of the most played games of all time and has been around for several years now and is still a very popular game. It’s even so famous for the comical and cartoony look people tend to use the assets from the game to make short funny movie sketches.

The whole approach of Team fortress 2 is a very cartoony style with unrealistic assets and animation making it great as an inspiration source for my cartoon crate. Team fortress 2 is using unnatural and funky shapes already in their 3D-modeling phase which I can apply directly to the process of making my crate.

I designed it to look as cartoony as possible by using unregularly basic shapes, just like in team fortress 2. I did also add some details such as the huge nails on the top lid to add that funny/odd feeling to cartoon themed assets tend to have.

Suumary from this week

I think by doing this kind of task you will improve your modelling skills a lot. The basic modelling phase is a huge step of the whole 3D process that is very important and is one of the fundamentals for a successful finished 3D model render. The negative part though is that this isn’t a process you would normally go through when creating 3D assets for a game as you way more often “bake” your models (I’m not sure of the term “bake” but what I mean is a technique making your finished assets look more like high poly models than what they truly are using normal maps and texturing. But that is something we will learn in coming lessons of this class and something I really look forward too).

If you want to reach the aesthetic goals for your games it’s very important to pay attention to how your assets are done and how you use the elements of art to provide the player with those through your models and/or objects. Same goes for the visual styles of your game. If you want your game to have a certain type of theme it’s important that all assets are done according to the same visual art style, otherwise the player won’t get the perception you intended for them.

Advanced game design – playing boardgames n’ stuff

Along with the 3D course we will also study Advanced Game Design for this semester. For starters in the game design course we had to play and analyse a board game of our own choice and its system. and for you who know me, I just picked one at random, and here we are with one of the most complex board games I have ever seen. hope you can follow along!!

About the game.

My group and I choose a strategic board game called “Dust”.  At first it looked pretty similar to “Risk”; the board itself contains an image of the world map with areas evenly placed over it and the box contains a lot of figurines in different colours that acts like your armies. The gameplay itself is about fighting other player’s armies by rolling dices to see who wins each battle for taking over and defending areas. The main difference from Risk is that this game also has strategy-cards with special ability’s that will help you in in different ways in the game. And it has a more strategically depth than Risk as you can affect the game play by changing the players order, plan on playing offensive or defensive etc. Also in Dust you win by having the highest score after any player have reached a certain score and not by dominating the world. So it’s more about defending and keeping your score-incomes to climb the scores to victory than playing offensive and own as much as you can.

The best and worst part.

The worst part of the game is the rulebook. First of there is two rule books in the box, and nowhere to be found it tells the differences between them except for how long time they each take to play. The first one is called “premium version rulebook” and the other one is called “epic version rulebook” so not even the names gives it away .You’ll simply have to read them both (and they’re about 24 pages each) to understand the differences. Except for the rules making the game actually being two different games with no separate definitions, the rules are hard to understand. As we played we had several situations with rules conflicting on how to do something, which means the rules aren’t finished or doesn’t cover all possible situations that can occur in a game session.

The best part of the game was that once you actually get the hang of how it is played and can concentrate on the strategic part it opens up for a lot of different tactics. The cards are a big part of the game and if you get the good ones and play them right it will have a huge effect on your scoreboard.

One other nice feature is that the playing order is changing depending on what card you play each round (the cards have numbers printed on them, and the person with the highest numbers starts for that round), so again, the tactics in this game are very deep, and everything is depending to how you choose to play.

Core system

The core game system of “Dust” would be the cards, they control who starts each round letting you play with more tactical options. The cards have a number printed on them (this number also tells you how many attacks you can do, but I will cover that soon) and the player with the highest number will be the first for that round followed by the player who had the second highest number and so on setting the player order. If two players have the same number on their cards they continue to the movement number on their card and compare them letting the highest number play first. If the moving number is the same as well, the cards with most tie-breaker-stars plays first (the stars is printed at the bottom of the card). After the playing order has been set, anyone having a “Koshka” (the name of the card) card can interrupt and change the playing order by getting in between two players turns for that round. This card is played as a second card but must be played at this time.

Using cards as special ability’s

When it’s your turn you have the choice to play a second card, each card have special ability that improves your choice of tactics by in one or other way give you a favour in the game depending on the card. There is for example there is these cards I mentioned where you plays your turn in between two other players, there is cards giving you a second chance by letting you re-roll dices, there is cards giving you more troops, letting you do special attacks, making another player your ally, letting you force other players troops to move etc. If two players plays cards that are conflicting with each other the card with the highest tie-breaker-stars wins.

Using card to produce

The card you choose when It’s your turn also controls the amount of points you can use to build new troops. By adding points from your capital and your production centres to the number on your played card you get the total of how many points you can spend on building units or more production centres, or, if you want to you can use them to pick up more cards. There is a five cards limit on how many you can have on your hand (with exception for the very first round when you have six). If you forget to pick up new cards and have none left for the next round you won’t be able to move or attack for that round, so it’s important to remember checking the amount of cards you have for the coming round and buy more if it’s not enough.

Using cards for movement

The played card also controls the amount of movements you are able to do for each round. You can see how many movements you can do by the printed number on the card. It’s in this phase where you make your choice by placing your armies to either reinforce and defending a point or by make your attack units stronger with moving in more units. The movements can also be used to take over land or sea areas that are unoccupied to give you advantage in the victory-points-phase where you can get bonus points from owning most land, water, power sources, capitals or production buildings.

You can always move as long as you please and as long as the two points are connected by your own units. There are some movements you can’t do though and that are when you want to transfer your land or air units over sea and the point where you want to put them down on are a sea area.

Using cards for combat

The card also controls the amount of attacks you can do for this round. The attacks can be done against any other player who has his or hers units next to yours (unless you or the other player have used a “Diplomat”-card that’s makes you allies). There are different types of combats.

First of there is the standard combat where two land-armies are attacking each other, and where the person with the highest tactical supremacy rolls the dices first (if the two players have the same tactical supremacy the defending army rolls the dices first). The tactical supremacy is defined by what units the player is using for the combat. Then there are special combats, and that’s when there are submarines included in a combat. Submarines can attack land without the defending player is allowed to roll any dices. Submarines can attack other submarines and then both players roll their dices at the same time. And then there is when a submarine is attacked by a bomber and then the defending player isn’t allowed to roll any dices.

Except for those types of attacks I mentioned, there is more special attacks you can do but not including units. You can use a card that lets you drop a bomb, gas other units out or in other actions interacts with the other player’s units.

There is in total 45 cards with different building, movement, combat points and tie-breaking-stars, and these can have 11 different special ability’s that each have separate rules applying to them on when they can be played and what effect they will have, what other players will have to do or isn’t allowed to do.

The best system in this game

The most interesting system in this game would be the victory points system as it tells who wins the whole game. The goal in the game is to collect as many of these points as you can before the game ends. After a certain amount of points (30 points if you’re five to six players, 40 points if you’re three to four players and 60 points if you’re two players) have been reached by any player it ends the game.

At the beginning of the game everyone puts a tank one the score-board and as the game proceeds you can gain points in various ways and move your tank up the score-board. At the end of each round when all players have taken their turns there is the victory-point-phase and that’s when you count and gain your points.

For starting everyone will gain a point for each capital they own. Then everyone will get a point for each power-source they have, then the player who owns most factory’s gain a point, then the player who own most land-areas will get one, and the player who owns most sea-areas.

As the victory-points is what the game is all about it keeps the game going. Players who doesn’t have as many “victory-points” sources will try to take over areas from the other players, and as me and my group played we could tell that players being behind ganged up against the winning player to slow him down from reaching the end-game-score and give the other losing players more victory-points. This is considered as a negative feedback-loop, and is great for a more even end score.

Target group interpretation

On the box there is only an age recommendation at +12 so I’m going to write what I think should be the target audience for this game. It would probably be for people who enjoy planning and strategy tasks, as you play against other people and you’ll have to play your cards right in order to be successful and win. And as the rules are pretty complex, each round is slow-paced, and there is a lot you as a player need to have control over and remember I would recommend this game for someone a bit older and mature so 12 is probably a good age to set the lower age at.

Summary

Overall I enjoyed playing Dust; it’s a game where competition really strikes. The many tactical options you’re allowed to do as a player is in one way very demanding on your focus on the game, but at  the same time, when you have played it for a few times you can use it against you opponents as there is just too much to control at once letting you surprise them. As the game is very hard to follow and its complexity all along for the first few times I would recommend this game to players who can give a few hours to even start playing it. For us it took just above two hours the first time just setting up the game, understanding what to do and what you can do etc. so as I said, I enjoyed the game and think other will as well, just give it a little time. But if you want a fast, simple game that can be played under one or two hours, choose another game to play.

3D Week 01 – Visuals in games

The summer is over and the second year has just started. This semester I will start learning 3D and I’m so freaking excited!

This first week we’ve been analysing screenshots with focus on the elements of art, such as Line, Shapes, Space, Value, Colour and Texture. I must tell I haven’t played any of these games, which gives me a fresh look at these pictures.

Batman

The first screenshot is from Batman.

Line: the camera is tilted and the lines are diagonally, which adds action to the shot.

Shapes: the spaceship, the platform, the machine in the background and the pads of the suit has harder shapes, which makes them look manmade while the suit and the rocky surfaces have more natural shapes.

Space: Batman is in focus which puts him in the positive space, the spaceship is in a middle between positive and negative space, and the rest of the image is negative space.

Value: Batman has the darker Value while the background is brighter. The light sources bring brightness to the background even if it has a darker appearance.

Colour: This screenshot has a mainly monochrome colour, but have some compliment colours like blue and orange spots.

Texture: Batman’s texture is smooth and diffuse. The spaceship and the machine’s texture are rusty metal .The background is mainly stone with some details of metal added to it.

The next screenshot is from Battlefield Hardline.

Line: just like the image before the camera is tilted and the lines are diagonally, which adds action to the image.

Shapes: all buildings, the helicopter and the zipline have hard and sharp shapes while the clouds, the mountains in at the horizon and the characters are made of softer shapes.

Space: The characters, the zipline, the main building, the helicopter, the white building and the building to the right are in the positive space. The rest of this image is in the negative space.

Value: The foreground has a darker value while the background has the brighter value. You can tell that the screenshot is taken in backlight by the differences of the value on the foreground and background.

Colour: This screenshot has a wider colour range than the last screenshot but is still pretty monotone, with a tint of blue and some brown tones in it with a few details in other colours such as the red bag.

Texture: The characters are mainly fabrics, and the buildings are of concrete, glass and other urban materials.

Mirrors-Edge-2

This screenshot is from Mirrors edge 2.

Line: The camera is slightly tilted to create a more action-filled shot. All the tall buildings with straight hard lines add an oppressed feeling for the character as well.

Shapes: The whole city, with its hard edges and square shapes, gives a man-made impression while the character and the clouds and mountains in the distance have natural shapes.

Space: The character, the wall she’s sitting on and the tall building in the middle is the positive space in this picture, while the rest of it is in negative space

Value: the character is the one with darkest value (except for her trousers), while the buildings have a brighter value with a few exceptions for shaded walls and dark details. The sky goes from a dark value to a brighter value towards the horizon.

Colour: This image is almost only black and white with very high contrast with a few details of high saturated colours, and a blue tint to add that futuristic feeling.

Texture: The character’s clothes is fabric, her hair is “fur”, and the buildings are made out of glass, white painted concrete, steel and other urban materials.

The-Witcher

The last screenshot is from The Witcher.

Line: In this image the camera is completely horizontal which decrease the intensive in the picture. Even if this is a shot of a battle it looks like it’s in slow motion. There are intentions of diagonal lines in the smoke creating a bit of tension in the image.

Shapes: the sword is the only thing in this image with a straight hard shape. Everything else is either rounded and soft or diffuse.

Space: the character and the monster are in the positive space while all the surroundings are in negative space.

Value: The both characters, the ground and the nearest surroundings have a darker value while the distant and the sky have a brighter value.

Colour: This Screenshot have a monochrome colour range with a tint of green/brown and hints of blue and orange as compliments to each other.

Texture: The character is mainly fabrics, the monster is a mix between rock and flesh. The surrounding textures are dirt, stones, wood and smoke.


 

This week we have also started 3D-modeling. The assignment was to create a level design from one of three games our teacher gave us. I haven’t played any of the games we could choose from but I have seen a play through of Journey so I choose that one. We then had to choose a keyword for our level which we also received from our teacher. I picked solitude as my keyword as the game itself feels very lonely and isolated (if you don’t choose the multiplayer mode that is).

I wanted to create large, flat and open space to strengthen the solitude feeling. The shapes of the building and the ruins are straight and hard which makes them a look a bit alien. To strengthen the solitude feeling even more the colour scheme is mono-tone, everything is orange and brown except for the character.

In the class, when showing the other students my work they nailed both the game and the feeling I was trying to create. They said that it feels very lonely as there is barely anything else than the building. But they also said it’s a bit suspense, like what is going to happen when the character reaches the building, what is it inside? Etc.

One of my classmates did also worked on a journey level, but she based her work more on the positive and negative spaces, which was really cool as it seems hard to do without texture, atmosphere and proper rendering
